One of the highlights of the New Mexico State Fair is the School Arts Exhibit. Every year, this exhibit showcases the artwork of students across the state, including a display of work from the Archdiocese of Santa Fe Catholic Schools. This year two young artists from Holy Ghost won first place ribbons! Angelique Lucero, second grader, won first place overall in the elementary division. Delaney Timlin, eighth grader, won the first place “People’s Choice Award” for middle school.
“I drew a peacock because it’s my favorite animal. It has lots of designs and dots on it. When you make art, it is your picture, which makes it unique. You make it with your own style,” says Angelique, describing her oil pastel and watercolor painting. Delaney describes her work in soft pastels. “I love to make art because it allows me to express my feelings. The artwork that received the award was a close-up of a necklace I own, inspired by artist Georgia O’Keefe. My art class, taught by Ms. Madigan, inspires me everyday to work harder and harder at my art. She allows us freedom in art, and isn’t that what art is about…expressing yourself!”
At Holy Ghost, our visual arts program teaches student artists a variety of skills and techniques, as well as offering experiences in many different media. This freedom and hard work that Delaney describes is at the heart of what we do. Students are given the tools, techniques, and guidance in exploring their own creative work, unfolding images that matter to them. It has been an honor and a privilege to work in the art studio with Holy Ghost artists for the last ten years.
