This year St. Mary's celebrates 130 years of educating New Mexico children! Although so much has changed from when SMS first opened in 1893, we have so much to be thankful for. This year we celebrated by unveiling Sr. Marinella Domenici, S.C. court in Parenti Gym. Cherished guests were members of the Domenici family followed by a Cougar basketball game between current students and alumni. The evening would not be complete without Coach Jennings heckling his former students from the sidelines!
St. Mary's continues to be a growth mindset school with a vision for continuous improvement and a fun place to work. The employees have spoken loud and clear having been voted Top Workplaces by the Albuquerque Journal four years in a row.
St. Mary's remains the only Catholic dual language school in New Mexico. While most DL schools have students where Spanish is their first language, SMS has a few where Spanish is the student's first language but mostly has students where English is the only language spoken in the home. This is exciting for us to instill biliteracy in two languages! Ensuring our students can read, write and speak in two languages proficiently. SMS has modeled their program under Boston College's Two-Way Immersion Network (TWIN) specifically designed for Catholic schools. The junior kindergarten class of students that pioneered the program in 2020, will now be second graders this fall. The school will continue to add a grade each year.
Of course St. Mary's still has the very traditional English grades it has been known for since 1893! Now, New Mexico families have a choice when they enroll at this iconic school. Call today for your personal tour of our campus and meet our team.
