Holy Ghost Catholic School students, PreK through 8th grade, enjoy music class several times a week. Students learn fundamental music theory to aid in singing both independently and in groups while on pitch, in rhythm, and with appropriate dynamics, phrasing, and interpretation. Students also practice blending instrumental timbres/tempos, matching dynamic levels, and responding to the cues of a conductor, as well as singing from memory a varied repertoire of songs representing genres and styles from diverse cultures, and most importantly from our Catholic tradition.
Our students strive to learn and perform easy rhythmic, melodic, and choral patterns accurately and independently on varying classroom instruments. They also practice improvising short songs and instrumental pieces, using a variety of sound sources. The Holy Ghost 7th and 8th grade classes combine and prepare for an annual spring musical performance.
Holy Ghost Catholic School students are taught to identify the sounds of a variety of instruments, including many orchestra and band instruments, as well as instruments from various cultures. They are taught how to use appropriate terminology in explaining music, music notation, music instruments/voices, and music performances. They are instructed and guided on how to understand, demonstrate, and perform appropriate audience behavior for the context and styles of music performed. All
Holy Ghost students play instruments and are able to perform songs as soon as the first day. Students use instruments such as desk bells, Boomwhackers, and xylophones, which all contain color coded notes for easy playability with various resources and music programs.
Holy Ghost Catholic School offers after school guitar, ukulele and vocal choral programs for beginner and intermediate level students.
