At Risen Savior Catholic Preschool, we believe that the best way for our students to learn about our faith and science is to experience lessons that are tactile, interactive, and fun. Lent and Spring allow us several opportunities to reach our young learners using hands-on activities. As Jesus washed the feet of his disciples on Holy Thursday, our staff carried out a special Lenten tradition of washing their students’ feet. After the Washing of the Feet, our students broke bread with one another and participated in a small Lenten meal amongst friends, as Jesus did with the disciples.
During the season of Spring, we celebrate God’s creation of new life. At Risen Savior, we incubated 12 fertilized chicken eggs. The students were able to chart the different stages of the chick’s embryonic growth. Using a method called candling, placing the egg on a bright light, they were able to see what was taking place inside the egg. Early childhood is a pivotal stage of human development and the religious, educational experiences of children at this young age hugely impact students’ cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual competencies that they carry with them throughout their time here at Risen Savior Catholic Preschool and well beyond.
